big plans

brought down
to size

because
as much as I would
love
the kitchen from
Practical Magic
It's Complicated
Father of the Bride
it ain't happening
right now

it's all about
b-a-l-a-n-c-e
and in this case that would be
a balancing of finances
a balancing of
wants
because
Spring dreaming
has grabbed
hold

and I am hoping
to accomplish
something along this scale

with that in mind
we can
make do
with what we have
indoors

rather than
a complete renovation
that quickly
got out of control
with words like
bump-out
bump-in
knock down
tossed around
I needed to re-calculate
re-calibrate

the next morning
after a good night of
sensible sleep
we decided to
settle

not a bad thing

very
practical magic stuff
requiring
little more than
a brief relocation
of kitchen gadgets
and
a dose of old fashioned
elbow grease

and we are well on our way
to a cleaner
functioning
kitchen
that won't require a big
reveal party

small changes
with
big impact
for the cook of the house
a-hem
that'd be me
with a long awaited farmhouse back splash
primed
and waiting for paint
sure
 that counter top
screams
80's
dusty rose

but
I choose to call it
retro
makes all the difference
don't ya think?
not to mention
it goes perfect
with my retro appliances

continuing

patch ceiling and walls
(check)
finish-up with a fresh
coat of
paint

that's our new
improved
plan

until I can decide
if I really want painted cabinets
because
as much as i love
the clean
bright
cheerful look
I'm not a huge fan of
maintenance
and other than a good scrubbing
with
Murphy's Oil Soap
each spring
 wood
requires
little attention
and that's my kind of kitchen
because there's
a swimming pool
that won't
wait!

  1. Spending more money on a space you might use for three months instead of something you use every day? Uhm...oh-kay. ;) Seriously happy that you are finally getting the backsplash of your dreams. I think you should try this with your countertops...what do you have to lose?

I vote for painted cabinets. I love mine, and do not see any more maintenance than wood...dirty is dirty, after all. Google Annie Sloan painted cabinets, and you will be inspired!

    1. I wouldn't feel right about throwing a lot of money (always more than anticipated) on a big remodel when what I have is just fine...not to mention with the weather warming (it will...right?!) my thoughts turn outside. Like I said, haven't decided on cabinets...you forget, I had painted on Knepper and they needed periodic "touch-ups"...ugh...plus, who wants to spend all summer sanding, priming, painting...ugh again! will check out those sites for some inspiration because I have been thinking of painting in stages...first by the frig...then work my way around as I feel like it...who knows...in about 10 years should be finished! LOL.We need to talk...will call. xo
